The Spyder Luxe Line is now available! In 1977, David Jacobs noted that there was only one brand of race sweaters available when his young sons were in the ski race circuit. He developed a new line of sweaters and marketed them to the close-knit race community, creating David L. Jacobs, Incorporated and operating as a mail order business.
In 1978, David created blue racing pants with yellow protective pads that gave the appearance of spider legs on the pants. Many skiers began calling the pants “spider pants” due to the design of the padding and David changed the name of the company to “Spyder,” choosing the spelling of the Ferrari Spyder as he was an avid sports car fan.
David’s son, Jake, drew the first actual web on a solid suit in 1984 when they became popular among skiers, replacing padded pants. In 1985, the company was sued by Marvel Comics for trademark infringement, claiming he web looked too much like the one on the Spiderman costume and after Steven Lee was dubbed “Spiderman” after his World Cup win wearing one of the suits. Marvel later dropped the lawsuit.
