Mary McFadden, born in New York she studied in Paris at the Ecole Lubec and the Sorbonne, and later attended New York's Traphagen School of Design, before taking a sociology degree at Columbia University. Her first job was in public relations at Dior leading her to a life in fashion. Through a marriage and after a move to South Africa, Mary McFadden became the merchandising editor for Vogue.
Travels to Europe, Africa, Rhodesia and the United States became McFadden’s muse or canvas for designs she began to create. Said designs began appearing in the pages of Vogue. It wasn’t until 1973 that McFadden presented a collection to the public based on African and Oriental fabrics attracting a great deal of attention by the famed Henri Bendel store on Fifth Avenue who bought many of her silk and batik coats.
