Carrying women towards comfortable and understated elegance was Guy Laroche’s clear motive when he opened his first couture house in Paris in 1957. His intent was to liberate women and create vibrant but affordable garments. Over the years, the Laroche house has done just that.

Laroche began working as a milliner, first in Paris and then in New York. He returned to Paris in 1949, working as an assistant until eventually opening his couture house, which was his own apartment. Known for his colorful, lively pieces, Laroche was one of the few designers to step into the world of separates. His creations helped to transition women from dresses to well curated, layered ensembles.

When Laroche died in 1989, he was later succeeded by Michel Klein, who created haute couture under the Laroche house. Since Klein, famed designers such as, Alber Elbaz and Herve Leger have designed for Laroche. Today, Marcel Marongiu is the designer and keeps the line fresh with modern silhouettes and classic execution. Marongiu’s take on fur is one of the most noticeable things about the Laroche house today. The furs chosen are luxe, yet the pieces are extremely wearable. Marongiu is said to magically make fur appear minimalist, which takes true genius.
