Not surprisingly, the most commonly farmed species is also the most popular fur of all time. Mink is soft, dense, and lightweight. Mink is available in a broad range of natural colors from white to black. The most commonly seen colors are pearl white, medium brown (demi-buff), and dark brown (ranch), though mink fur can be dyed in many different colors, and has been known to take on vivid shades of violet and sapphire, among others. Mink can be sheared, knitted, or worked in any number of other ways, making it a versatile fur for coats and accessories, as well as for trimmings. Mink is very soft, however not the softest fur (that would be chinchilla) or the most expensive (that's sable) mink has never been dethroned as the queen of the furs.
Due to its incredible softness and enchanting colors, chinchilla fur has become increasingly popular, especially for fur trim. The wild chinchilla is now a completely protected species in its native South America, but it is sustainably farmed in both North and South America, as well as in Europe. The chinchilla's exceptionally silky fur is truly coveted, ranging form Dark to Black Velvet. Black Velvet skins have the darkest defined black striping, highlighted by gray with pure clarity. Triple X dark is considered the best color, with darkest black stripe. Due to its shear luxury and delicate nature, chinchilla is often used for trimming mink coats to add that extra wow factor.
Lynx fur is another common fur used in trimming. The name lynx refers to any of four species of wildly furry, medium-sized wildcats native to North America and Russia. Lynx comes in a variety of colors ranging from medium brown, to gold, to off-white. Whiter furs tend to be the most prized, though all lynx species have white fur on their undersides and inside their legs. Other popular fur trims include fox (silver, blue, or red), raccoon, and beaver.
